The Wind Band is the newest ensemble at the University of Portsmouth; we have been going strong now for about four years. The University of Portsmouth's wind band is conducted by Crispin Ward; an extremely talented musician and a professional conductor. Crispin brings much experiance and fun to the Wind Band, more information about him can be found here. We are a fun and friendly group and enjoy the common interest of playing music. Please find us online on Facebook.
We usually rehearse on a Tuesday between 6.30-8.30pm in the Wiltshire Building room 1.09 followed by a drink afterwards! We are always looking for wind instruments, brass instruments and percussionists! Open to all students attending the University of Portsmouth.
No auditions are required however the recommended standard for members is Grade 3 minimum, although beginners are welcome to enhance their learning in a friendly, relaxed environment!
We tend to look at a wide range of music which also tends to be different standards to suit everyone, any requests most welcome! Examples of music we have previously looked at are; Music by John Miles, Star Wars by John Williams, Crown Imperial by William Walton, Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen Abba Medley and many, many more!
We do a range of concerts throughout the academic year. We usually play at the students union or in local establishments and charge for tickets this money then goes towards new music! We also visit local areas and perform in places such as Hotham Park in Chichester. The summer of 2009 we completed a mini tour of the Isle of Wight which was very fun (if you liked camping!). We are hoping to carry on doing similar concerts in the up coming years with a committed wind band!
Please come and find the Music Society stand at the Fresher's Fayre or drop me an email if you would like to join the Wind Band.
Thank you and look forward to seeing you at the next rehearsal!
