Choir

Choir manager for the year 2009/10 is Suzy Wise.
The choir primarily sings classical pieces, some of which you will know, and some that will be unknown to everyone.

We are a large friendly group of students, staff and members of the community all with a love of singing. Rehearsals are every wednesday 5.30pm - 7.30pm in Wiltshire Studio 1. There are no auditions, all abilities and experience (or lack of!) welcome. We are a sociable group and like to have a drink afterwards

We give 2 main concerts a year - in December and May, and also sing for the University carol service. Our most recent performance was of Handel’s Birthday Ode for Queen Anne and a world premiere of Handel’s Funeral Anthem for Queen Caroline.

Other recent concerts include performances of Ottorino Respighi - Laud to the Nativity, Gordon Jacob - The New-Born King, Brahm’s German Requiem and a collection of pieces by Finzi and Britten.

Repertoire for the coming year will include Haydn’s Missa Cellensis (Mariazeller Mass) for performance on 28 November 2009 in St. John’s Cathedral and Verdi’s Requiem on 8th May 2010 (this will be a joint venture with Portsmouth’s Festival Choir).

Chamber Singers

If you want to take things a little more seriously you can audition for the chamber singers, a group of about 20 who learn and sing more challenging works.

The chamber singers sang live on Radio 4 to promote the world premiere of Handel’s Funeral Anthem. Listen to it here

Chamber singers performing Xicochi xicochi by Gaspar Fernandez in May 2007

Chamber singers performing In a Persian Market by Albert W. Ketelbey in May 2007

The chamber singers recently went on tour to Germany where they performed 3 concerts of both sacred and secular music spanning the centuries.
